Complexly layered storytelling never comes easy from a scripting perspective, but must land easily for the audience. Getting to "an easy watch" by scripting multiple through-lines is not common. But for me, it was a dream challenge. Revealing how an ecosystem works—flowing into the interactions of geology and biology and back again—while devising novel ways of interrelating the Indigenous histories of these lands required sensitivity, subtlety, and nuance. And the painstaking efforts taken to avoid "dumbing it down" provided an incredible opportunity to "smarten up'" the web-like stories told. As a result, these episodes deliver not just an understanding of the richness of our National Parks, but a worldview on how to appreciate them.

In developing, writing and producing their stories, we detail their inspiring fight with the American healthcare system and how they each overcame the odds against them. When this two-hour, hard science project first landed on Kyle’s desk, the mandate was to make a film about microbiology. The real question was: How can we make microbes sexy?! Instead of filming in university labs, Kyle’s answer was to film microbiology in the weirdest, strangest, and most exotic locations across the globe—alongside the scientists who examine them—that mirrored the environments of alien planets. This vision took the production across four continents… with rigorous treks up Mt. Kenya, across Alaska’s Matanuska glacier, atop the highlands of Chile, and through good old fashioned Yellowstone.
